TUNDRA® | The ultimate collaborative, tool holder UAV

The Tundra is an innovative UAV. It has many assets : interchangeable arms, easily transportable, standard interfaces to fix accessories, an upgreadable and lasting design, a hardened, rain resistant and dustproof body. Interfaces all around its body turn it into a multifunctional structure make it a base for highly demanding projects. Adapt your Tundra to every use and make it fly in any environment.

These features make it a multipurpose UAV, particularly meeting the usual needs of the following fields: industry, audiovisual, security and defense. Some extra services may be offered for peculiar sectors (eg: military maintenance contracts).

The UAV structure is made in France, in collaboration with french partners. The Tundra is a collaborative,open innovation UAV. We, at Hexadrone, are convinced that major evolutions can only happen through the creation of a common core of knowledge, thanks to collaboration. We want to coexist and work peacefully, in harmony, with our current and future partners.

The result of a 3 years development

During thoses three years of development, we have iterated, tested the project many times. We have made it progress, presented it on exhibitions (CES, Milipol, Sofins...), taken into account numerous experiences feedbacks… This extended period was necessary to analyse the market, to mull over our thoughts and to adapt the Tundra to the state of the art's quick evolution. We worked hard on the ergonomic and innovative aspects as well as on the aesthetic one. Our work gets rewarded as The Tundra won in 2018 the prestigious Red Dot Design Award.

Interchangeable arms: A unique yet multipurpose UAV

One of the Tundra’s main asset is its interchangeable arms. Four different arm sets are currently available but the range will grow, depending on the evolution of the state of the art. Nevertheless you can already adapt the UAV setup to your needs and work environments. The modularity allows a great variation of configuration, to improve for example : the carrying capacity, to extend the operating life, to change the size or reduce the noise level. It also eases the transportation and the maintenance operations.

Maintenance: Tundra’s design key point

Predictive and corrective maintenance operations are almost impossible with closed systems but are yet key points to ensure UAVs' long-term operability. The modularity of the Tundra, and more specifically its interchangeable arms, allow easy maintenance operations. These features have also been thought to fight the current obsolescence issue. With the constantly evolving state of the art, closed systems are very short-lived. Progressivly change the elements of your Tundra, according to the state of the art evolution.

Maintaining the devices in optimal operational condition is a key point for many users, and more specifically for the French military market. When dealing with the French army, suppliers must sign a peculiar contract called « MCO » (Maintien en Condition Opérationnel). That is, the sold devices must be designed to be easily repairable by random soldiers during a mission (NT1), or by a skilled soldier in the base’s workshop (NT2). For advanced repairs, the device is sent back to the supplier (NT3). The Tundra have been designed to fully answer these technical constraints.


Protecting nature and environment is essential. Choosing local partners and favouring short cycles was obvious for us.

Planned - or not - obsolescence is also an environmental scourge we have to fight against. That's why we have designed the Tundra to be lasting, easily repairable and deeply evolving.

Numerous interfaces to easily fix additional accessories

We have equipped the Tundra UAV with numerous standard interfaces to fix additional accessories. Besides being the support of side units, the standard primary and secondary interfaces make a connection between the inside and the outside of the UAV body. Five standard primary interfaces

  • - 1 frontal interface (P1)
  • - 2 lateral interfaces (P2 and P3)
  • - 1 underneath and 1 top interfaces (P4 and P5)

There are standard primary interfaces on every side of the UAV (except at the back). They have been designed for average-sized accessories.

Six standard secondary interfaces

  • - 2 frontal interfaces (S1 and S6)
  • - 2 left lateral interfaces (S2 and S3)
  • - 2 right lateral interfaces (S4 and S5)

There is a pair of secondary interfaces on each side of the UAV. These ones were designed for small-sized accessories such as pitot probe, antennas, sensors…

An on-board computer dedicated interface

With the integration of an on-board computer, also called « companion computer », go beyond UAVs usual scopes.

UAVs need always more processing capacities as they are used in more and more different fields. That’s the reason why we have provided the Tundra with a NVIDIA JETSON TX2 type-like on-board computer dedicated opening (if fitting, other computers can be installed). The computer allows the use of leading-edge technologies, quick source data collections with no lag phase, in an edge-computing logic.

A sliding rail to add accessories

At the back of the UAV a sliding rail system equipped with a connector allows you to add some more accessories. For the moment we have developed specific mouting brackets for a parachute or a smart ELISTAIR tethered station.

Cube inside!

Our hardware development skills are complemented by a sound knowledge of software development.

The Tundra UAV have been created to work in synergy with the flight controller « Cube », developped and designed by Hex & ProfiCNC. With the redundancy of all its inertial unit’s sensors – barometer and compass – the Cube aims to ensure safety while meeting at the same time the ongoing evolution of aircraft design standards. We have chosen the Cube device as it is both evolving and yet enduring, which fully matches with our fight against obsolescence. Enjoy the performances of the next generation H7 processors with the orange version thanks to a compatible and interchangeable range of Cube.

The Cube range is using the ArduPilot or PX4 software suite which allow automatic planned flight. The Cube is the result of a 5 years development by multidisciplinary egineers. It is an open-source, constantly evolving autopilot supported by a large community. Millions of devices use it around the world.

The Cube will allow you to interface a large ecosystem of ready-to-use sensors and telecommunication units directly on your UAV. The Cube is equipped with 5 general purpose serial ports, 2 CAN bus interfaces (UAVCAN accepted), 2 I2C ports, 3 analogue inputs and up to 6 PWM outputs.


A Controller Area Network – CAN bus data is a multiplexing communication system able to connect a combination of calculators and/or sensors without a referring computer to master the network’s communications. UAVCAN is a lightweight protocol designed for reliable communication in aerospace and robotic applications. The Ardupilot and PX4 perfectly master this protocol allowing to easily interface a wide range of devices.


MAVLink or Micro Air Vehicle Link is a protocol for communicating with unmanned air vehicle and for the inter-communication of the subsystem of the vehicle. The protocol defines a large set of messages which can be found on ArduPilot and PX4. MAVLink messages can be sent over almost any serial connection and does not depend upon the underlying technology (wifi, 900mhz radio, etc).

An ecosystem of suitable accessories

Thanks to its opened flight electronic system and the Cube flight controller, the Tundra UAV is the perfect host platform for many accessories already available on the market. With the Cube embedded intelligence freely adapt sensors, antennas, lidar and many other accessories...

Suitable payloads

Thanks to its opened structure and non proprietary system you can adapt many payloads already alvailable on the market. Unlike market's other drones, the Tundra is a tool-holder, designed for a lot of different purposes and to hold numerous payloads (max 3kg) on or under its structure... Apart from the obvious constraints of weight, size and electronic compatibility, imagination is your only limit.

A Made in France UAV

The Tundra UAV has been designed by our teams in the french Haute-Loire department. Its structure – frame, body and arm – is fully made in France. We work as much as possible with local actors to favour a short cycle, allowing a perfect control of every component of the Tundra UAV. This approach enabled us to create strong boundaries with our partners who are now very involved in the Tundra's R&D process. This short cycle is also a token of quality and the guarantee of a simplified and fast after-sales service. We are active members of the French Tech and French Fab communities. We want the Tundra UAV to stand as one of the many symboles of french expertise.
